PJML markup: hyphens and dashes

In PJML you can easily type hyphens ‐, endashes – and emdashes — .

The basics

For a hyphen type used to link words or parts of words use a single dash.

For an endash used to indicate a range of values use two dashes.

For an emdash used to set off sections of a sentence for emphasis use three dashes.

Examples

The burglar left empty-handed due to the ear-piercing alarm alarm.

The burglar left empty‐handed due to the ear‐piercing alarm alarm.

There are 10--15 items left on my list and only 2--3 days to finish them.

There are 10 – 15 items left on my list and only 2 – 3 days to finish them.

My mother --- a very strong-willed woman --- made it clear she had no intention of going.

Details

The characters used to replace single, double and triple dashes can be configured using Intellipunct. The spacing rules used to control the use of whitespace around dashes can also be configured using Intellipunct.

Alternatives

There are no alternative ways of notating hyphens, endashes or emdashes.
