Producing a performing edition means to take the source material and from it produce a score and parts that can be used in a performance or recording. Although usually used when working with historical manuscript scores from a library or archive, the term is just as applicable to the work required to take a contemporary composer’s work from conception to performance.
This is not just about the notes; all the information required by players such as tempo markings, articulation, acidentals and dynamics must be transferred into the individual parts. In the case of historical sources it may require the modification of parts or scoring to suit modern instruments or transposition to suit vocal ranges.
Sometimes the process can involve transcription or arrangement for the available instruments including, where appropriate, the correct choice of clef and transposition.
The notation used will be appropriate to the performance context. Orchestras, bands, soloists, pit players, choirs, backing groups, etc. each have different requirements and expectations for bar numbers, rehearsal marks, cues, staff size, page turns, etc. Getting these things right first time saves time in rehearsal and lead to better performances.
If required, editorial articulation, accidentals and dynamics can be notated in a different way to those in the source.
We can provide the new edition as digital files for you to use as masters for printing or for downloads, or we can provide them as printed sets for you to sell or use in performance. See printing and distribution for more details.
