Administrator

An administrator is a user with specific extra rights to add, edit and delete configuration settings, to add, edit and delete other accounts, etc.

As well as being able to enhance and control your website or application, an administrator can also break or destroy your website or application. For this reason you should consider carefully which users you give administrator rights to and limit the number of administrators for your website or application.

In the PlumJelly framework a user is given administrator rights by being made a member of the Administrators group. This can only be done by an existing administrator.

In the PlumJelly framework most applications recognise four levels of user: public (no user account and/or not logged in), member, manager and administrator. In many cases it would be more appropriate to give a user either member or manager rights rather than full administrator rights.

Whilst we will support all users who have made a mistake (in most cases this will just be to return a configuration setting to its previous value) we cannot be held liable for any loss of data resulting from misuse of administrator rights by our customers. Many customers successfully run their website or application without any user having administrator rights.

Note: if you have only one administrator and wish to change the user who has administrator rights, the old administrator should add the new administrator and the new administrator should then remove the old administrator. Removing the old administrator first would mean you had no administrator and so could not then add the new administrator.
